5/19 Elm Tree Cottage -

- II

A pair of cottages, now one house. Early C18, extended at rear in 1970 and 1980. 1½ storeys, 6 bays. Timber-framed and rendered, with clay pantiled roofs. Central internal chimney-stack with plain red brick shaft. 4 mid-C20 casement windows and 2 gabled dormers to front elevation. Entry into part of new extension at rear. Framing exposed inside: thin studs bisected by primary braces, joists set on edge. Each cottage had a typical layout: a 2-bay living room with an adjacent one-bay walk-in larder and a corner stair. Above, a main bedroom and landing bedroom. The chimney-stack had 2 back-to-back hearths on the ground storey, with timber lintels over and bake ovens to one side. The original stairs and partitions on the ground storey have been removed.
