Details

SOMERLEYTON THE STREET TM 49 NE 4/68 Nos.1 to 7 (consecutive) (Widows Cottages) II Row of 7 estate cottages. Probably c.1850 (not later than 1861). Yellow brick with white brick dressings. Roof of mid C20 concrete plaintiles. Symmetrical form with gabled end blocks set forward and a slightly projecting gable to the centre. A range of 7 2-light casement windows under segmental arches; 4 gabled half-dormers. The end blocks have 4-light canted bays on the ground floor. The windows only retain their original lead lattice cames in the upper part of each light. 7 doorways, 5 facing forward and 2 in the end walls: each has a boarded door and gabled porch on timber posts. 7 white brick stacks. Included as a largely unaltered example of the local estate architecture built for Sir Morton Peto to the designs of John Thomas.
