Details
SOMERLEYTON SOMERLEYTON PARK TM 49 NE 4/47 The Old Rectory (formerly listed as The 27.11.54 Rectory) II House, formerly the rectory. 1773, with possibly earlier work in rear wing. Red brick, formerly colourwashed, with a wooden modillion eaves cornice. Part plastered to rear where a C16 range formerly adjoined. Hipped roof of glazed black pantiles. 2 storeys. 5-bay facade: slightly inset sash windows with glazing bars under flat brick arches; the 2 right hand openings on the first floor are bricked up. Doorway with 6-panel raised and fielded door, plain semi-circular fanlight, pilasters with fret decoration and a dentil cornice with broken pediment carried on console brackets. The door is approached by a flight of 3 stone steps, with a simple wrought iron handrail each side. The right gable end has a full-height 3-light splayed sashed bay. The ground floor rooms have moulded cornices, one also with a fluted frieze. Well stair with 3 turned balusters to each tread, carved tread-ends and a ramped handrail in pine. A good Adam-style fireplace on the first floor.
