4/34 Church Cottage -

- II

House. C16 and early C17. 2 storeys: 2-cell lobby-entrance form. Timber- framed and roughcast rendered; clay pantiles. The internal chimney-stack has a plain rebuilt red brick shaft. 2 3-light casement windows with transomes to each storey. Plank door under a small open porch with single-pitch pantiled roof. The 2 halves of the house seem not to be contemporary, although close in date: a join in the wallplate on the line of the stack. To the left of the stack, the ground floor room has walls of very good close studding, unusually combined with a ceiling with widely-spaced joists and a main beam with a small ovolo-moulding; the roof over this section is original, with clasped purlins and windbraces. To the right of the stack, a slightly lower 2-bay section has a main beam with wide chamfer, curved stops and main posts with carved shields, one bearing the initials W over CS, the other dated 1610, with initials W over JS. On the upper floor, the tie-beam has arched braces, but the roof is a C20 renewal. A small 1½ storey wing at the rear has widely- spaced studding with arched braces at the corners; roof concealed
