II
Large country house, now a hotel. C18 core; altered and improved 1794 for Rev. John Amyas; considerable early C19 additions. Stucco on brick, slated roof. 3 storeys with some 2-storey ranges at the rear. 7 windows, 3:1:3, with flanking full-height 3-light canted bays; to the right is a mid or late C19 addition, windowless to the main facade. Sash windows with glazing bars in flush frames. Central doorway with 4-panel door, the 2 lower panels raised and fielded, the upper panels glazed; Greek Doric portico on 4 fluted columns and 2 plain pilasters, an addition of mid C19. Wooden modillion eaves cornice, continued round the left hand return front. There is a range of 6 sash windows to the left hand return front (some blank panels) and behind this a 2-bay 2-storey addition. Late C18 staircase with 2 turned balusters per tread, a ramped and wreathed handrail and carved tread ends. The left hand front room has a stone fireplace with a frieze depicting a Grecian figure reclining on a couch; to either side of the fireplace are shelved recesses with painted decoration. A doorway off the hall has shafted reveals, each terminating in a bearded head of a man, one sad, one happy. Early C19 veined marble fireplace in bar area.
