RUSHMERE
Church of St. Michael & All Angels
I
Parish church. Medieval. Nave, chancel, west tower, south porch. Flint rubble with some remains of plaster to nave; stone dressings. Thatched roof. Circular tower, C12 or earlier: C19 lancet west window and evidence for blocked lancet windows higher up; Y-traceried bell-chamber openings to each quarter; red brick parapet with gargoyles at the foot. C12 nave, probably heightened in early C14: the north and south walls each have one Y-traceried window and one two-light Perpendicular window. Early C14 south nave doorway with moulded arch; simpler north doorway. Early C18 red brick porch. Early C14 chancel: to the south there are three Y-traceried windows and a Priest's doorway, and to the north two similar windows; three-light east window with intersecting tracery. Most of the windows are largely original.
Interior. Both nave and chancel have coupled rafter roofs with boarded ceilings. In the south west nave is the niche of a banner stave locker. There are piscinas in the north and south chancel; that to the south has a cusped ogee arch and a little tracery above, and is set in the east jamb of a window, the sill of which is dropped to form a sedilia. C15 octagonal font, the bowl panels carved with angels bearing shields, alternating with flower motifs; four lions against the stem. Early C17 pulpit with backboard, on a later base.
