NORWICH ROAD
Buck's Head Inn

II

Public house. C16, in 2 phases, with C18-C19 in-line addition to left,
forming a single long range. Timber framed and plastered: some old panelled
plasterwork with chevron-pargetted infill. Left gable end of colourwashed
brick. Plaintiled roof. 1½ storeys. 4 windows: C18-C19 casements to upper
floor, small-paned ground floor casements of c.1900. One gabled dormer to
left. 2 mid C20 gabled porches with plank doors. Internal stack rebuilt C20
with cross-axial shaft. Gable stack to left. Interior. Earliest phase to
right, in 3½ bays, has exposed first floor studding with heavy reverse-curved
braces. Addition to left, perhaps late C16, is in 2 unequal bays. Both
phases appear to have coupled-rafter roofs, the collars missing in the later
work. Most of timbers on ground floor are concealed; evidence for service
partition at earlier end. Fireplace at left gable end has re-used C16 moulded
lintol. Roof over later addition at left end destroyed by fire in 1980's.
