Details

BRAISEWORTH PRIORY LANE TM 17 SW 1/12 Old Church Farmhouse -

-- II Manor farmhouse. Early-mid C16 cross-wing to right, projecting to front. Early or mid C17 3-cell main range with small late C17 addition to rear. Timber framed and plastered. Pantiled roof, the rear of main range and part of wing with glazed black tiles. 2 storeys and attic. Windows mainly mid C20 standard casements without glazing bars. Half-glazed door in gable end of wing. Main range has internal stack with original square shaft and C19 cap. Later internal stack in wing. Interior. Cross-wing is fragment of high quality C16 house, probably a parlour cell; the present range once continued to the west. Former outside wall against main range has heavy close studding with sill of oriel window and an upper window with plain mullions set square. Central tie beam retains one solid brace with carved spandrel containing a shield, originally painted. The cambered upper ceiling is apparently original as there is evidence for a gable window. Intact queen-post roof, the central truss with down braces from queen-posts to centre of tie beam (one brace is missing). Main range in 4½ bays: plain first floor studding, one ground floor room with plain joists set flat. Unmodernised former dairy at north end. Oak newel stair, the attic flight with old door. Roof has 2 rows of butt purlins.
