Details

DEBENHAM HIGH STREET (west side) TM 16 SE 6/103 No.32 (Debenham Fish 9.12.55 Shop), No.34, No.36 (formerly listed as Premises adjoining The Limes on S. side)

GV II

2 houses and shop. C15 origins, largely rebuilt early C16 in Wealden form, one jettied end now No.38 (qv. Item 6/104). Timber framed and rendered. Pantiled roof, No.34 with glazed black tiles. 2 storeys. Jetty to right now masked by projecting late C19 shopfront (No.32). Brackets to flying wallplate, partly concealed by a coved cornice. Mainly old 3-light casement windows; No.34 has 6-paned ground floor sash window. Boarded door to No.36, 4-panel door to No.34. Internal stack. Interior. End wall of No.36 is substantially C15: heavy studding; rail with mutilated moulding and embattled decoration, probably a dais beam at upper end of open hall. Remainder seems C16 although most of structure in No.34 is concealed. Rear wall of No.36 has blocked window with cavetto mullions; adjacent cross-partition has 4-centre arched doorway. Stack has bay but is a later insertion, probably preceded by a timber flue. Behind stack is a stair with heavy treads. Plain crown-post roof over both occupations, probably once extending over adjacent carriageway.
