Details
WORLINGWORTH SWAN ROAD TM 26 NW 5/139 The Grange - II Former farmhouse. Core of perhaps early C16 with C17 enlargement; later alterations, especially of late C19. A long main range with a short anciliary wing set forward of the right gable end and almost corner-to-corner with it. To the rear of the main range on the left is a small gabled addition in parallel. Timber framed with facades encased in late C19 red brick; remainder of main range mostly plastered. Plaintiled roofs except rear slope of main range which is pantiled. 2 storeys and attic. 4 windows, inset 4-paned sashes; a further sash window and 2 mid C20 tripartite casements to ground floor, all with timber lintols. To the right is a mid C20 three-quarter glazed door. Internal stack, placed almost centrally, with a rendered shaft with corbelled cap. The wing has similar windows and a gable stack. Interior much altered, mainly in C19; most of the framing is concealed. To left of stack is a 2-bay room with heavy plain joists; the bridging beam, now reduced in depth, shows evidence for substantial braces to the wallposts. To right of stack is a further 2-bay ceiling with plain joists; the bridging beam, also cut back, shows evidence for studding. Queen-post roof over centre of range, with crude crown-post trusses above: the crown-posts are plain and are not pegged to the collars; one-way bracing to collar purlin. Some rafters show evidence of fire damage the the roof has probably been partly rebuilt. Over each end is a C17 roof with stepped butt purlins.
