BEDFIELD CHURCH LANE TM 26 NW 2/16 The Crown - - II
Former farmhouse, now public house. Probably C15. Rear additions of C18 and mid C20. Timber framed and plastered, thatched roof. 3-cell form. 2 storeys. 3 windows, mid C20 2-light small-paned casements. Lobby entrance with mid C20 semi-glazed door. Internal stack with plain red brick shaft. Later stack on outside of left gable end. Interior. Probably an open hall house although the evidence provided by the frame is inconclusive. Widely- spaced studs, with paired tension braces in upper gable end and reverse-curved braces at service gable end. Hall has mid rail, side walls of end cells do not. One original diamond-mullioned window in service end and evidence for further original diamond-mullioned windows in hall, apparently to both ground and upper floors. Mutilated remains of paired 2-centre arched service doorways; service partition did not continue above the ground floor. A further 2-centre arched doorway leading into the parlour. Half of the rear cross-entry doorhead also remains in position, the other half removed a short distance to the opposite end of the bar. Over the hall chamber is a flat tie beam with short braces to the wallposts. Parlour ceiling joists have original trimming for a wide opening whose precise function is unclear (cf. a similar opening at Ebenezer Cottage, Bedfield, Item 2/29). Remainder of floor joists concealed. The coupled-rafter roof is sooted but there is no clear evidence for sooting on much of the structure below. Stack inserted into upper end of hall.
