MANOR FARM HOUSE

Estate Farmhouse. 1876 by Philip Webb with minor late C20 alterations.
Red brick in Flemish bond. Steeply pitched red pantile hipped roof with
deep sprocketed eaves and wooden balustrade at apex. Symmetrically
arranged brick axial stacks.
Plan: Double depth square plan with entrance hall, staircase behind
the right hand room and single storey service wing around small yard
at the back.
'Queen Anne' domestic revival style.
2 storeys and attic. Symmetrical 3-bay south front. Narrow 8-pane sashes
on ground floor with segmental relieving arches and herringbone brickwork
in tympanae. 2 and 3-light casements on first floor with glazing bars.
Central recessed porch with wide segmental brick arch in 4 arches on splayed
jambs with plain polygonal brick capitals; niches inside porch with rubbled
brick shell canopies and wooden seats; glazed and- panelled door and
rectangular overlight. Pair of central axial stacks at front clasping flat
roof dormer. Deep corbelled brick stringcourse at first floor level around
house. Right hand east return has canted bay on left of ground floor and
hipped dormer. Left hand west side has late C20 conservatory; Rear and sides
all have similar sashes on ground floor and casements on first floor to
those at front. Single storey service wing at rear with hipped pantile roof
which is carried down on east side over verandah with wooden posts.
Interior: most of the original joinery survives including open-well stick
baluster staircase with ball finials to the newels; single bolection
chimneypieces with shelves on first floor and attic. The ground floor
chimney pieces are replacements. Large kitchen fireplace with segmental
arch and kitchen dresser. Good scullery-back kitchen fireplace, its high
lintel jettied out on corbelled jambs and with oven.
Note: Manor Farmhouse was originally the home farm of the Nether Hall
estate.
