Details
OAKLEY OAKLEY PARK TM 17 NE 2/143 The Old Mill II House, incorporating small remains of watermill. Used in C19 as laundry for Brome Hall and Oakley Park estate. Principally late C16 and C17, in several phases; mid C20 addition to north. Timber framed, mainly plastered, with a pantiled roof. 2 storeys and attic. Various small-paned casement windows. At the south end are 2 small square windows at upper floor level, probably once ventilation openings for the laundry drying room. C18 lean-to addition across part of the front, with boarded and half-glazed doors. A glazed door in the main range. One gabled dormer. 2 stacks with clustered polygonal shafts. Short lean-to on south gable end was part of a mill, which must have extended as far as the adjacent wheel channel. Older part of house is to south: the upper floor of the end room has been removed, probably when the laundry was started; the adjacent bay has plain joists to ground floor ceiling. North half is C17: one bay of chamfered joists; plain first floor studding. Roof over this section has stepped diminished butt purlins, of later C17 date. ______________________________
