WOOLPIT WARREN LANE TL 96 SE 1/183 The Lanes - - II*

House, c.1520 with mid c19 alterations. 2 storeys. 2-cell plan. Timber- framed and plastered; the first floor is long-wall jettied on the east side with exposed joist-ends. The gables are encased in gault brick, and the ground storey walling beneath the jetty is encased in red and gault brick in a chequerboard pattern. Plaintiled roof, hipped and gabletted at both ends. An axial C16 chimney of red brick. Various mid C19 casements. In the south gable are late C20 mullioned windows. An original 5-light chamber window with hollow-chamfered mullions is exposed and glazed. C19 entrance doorway; late C20 framed and boarded door. High-quality timber framing exposed throughout. An unusual plan-form: at the south gable is evidence for a cross-entry. An altered entrance doorway has a 4-centred arched head with vinescroll-enriched spandrels. Part of the wainscotted cross-entry screen repositioned, with rare linenfold carving on both faces. All beams and joists at ground storey are double-ogee carved. Back to back fireplaces with cambered lintels roll- moulded and vinescroll carved. Both rooms have moulded cills from very wide oriel windows on the east side. Open trusses have shallow 4-centred arched bracing. Complete coupled-rafter roof. A C19 pantiled lean-to outshut on the west side. Graded II* as a rare example of a small house of this plan form, and of unusually high quality.
