Details
WOOLPIT GREEN HILL TL 9762 5/138 Lyndhurst and The Post _ Office (formerly listed as Post Office and shop and 15.11.54 two houses adjoining) GV II Post office with dwelling above and to rear; and a separate dwelling to right. Built as one house in early C16 or earlier; C17 and later alterations. 2 storeys. 4 windows. The front range is in two sections: to left timber- framed and encased in c19 brick now painted, and to right timber-framed and weatherboarded at 1st storey with pebble-dash below. This section has an underbuilt long-wall jetty. Plaintiled roof. Lyndhurst has c19 small-pane sashes. The Post Office has 3-light C20 casements with leaded glazing at 1st storey and two large C20 shop windows below. C19 4-panelled entrance door to shop, with upper panels glazed. Half-glazed door to Lyndhurst. A high- quality wing of 2 bays to rear of Post Office, c.1500. Timber-framed and formerly jettied on two consecutive sides at the rear, with remains of corner post. Much underbuilding and encasing in red brick. A C17 chimney with 3 detached octagonal shafts, and a freize of diaper patterned terracotta tiles at the base. An early C17 oriel window with ovolo moulded mullions. Interior: The open truss of the rear wing is of high quality: a cambered archbraced tiebeam with one of a pair of pilaster shafts with a carved capital. An octagonal crownpost with 4-way braces and moulded capital. The front range has some unchamfered floor joists of medieval appearance in the Post Office. Interior of Lyndhurst not examined.
