4/218 Kismet and Kismet Cottage -

-- II

Two houses, built as one in C16. 2 storeys. 3-cell plan. Timber-framed and plastered. Glazed pantiled roof, formerly thatched. C17 axial chimney of pink/buff brick with sawtooth shaft; another of early C19 red brick at right hand end. Kismet has a C20 boarded entrance door with open porch on posts. Unmoulded C16 framing exposed internally: close-studding with a blocked diamond-mullioned window. A wide lintelled open fireplace in the hall. The central section containing hall and service rooms is the earliest. To left is a parlour block, perhaps added later in C16 or after c.1600, now a separate dwelling known as Kismet Cottage (interior not examined). The earlier range was originally of one storey with attics; the walls were raised and the roof made uniform when a further cell was added to right in c.1800.
