Grange Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse, mid C16. 2 storeys. 3-cell cross-entry plan. Timber-framed and
plastered. Plaintiled roof; an axial C17 chimney of red brick. C19
casements. C19 boarded door at cross-entry position, with a light open porch
on slender posts. A complete mid C16 house with late C16 or early C17
alterations. The cross-passage is complete, with twin service room doorways;
the 4-centred arched head is visible above one of them. The parlour to right
has ogee-and-scotia moulded beams. Good tension-braced studding with one
blocked diamond mullioned window and evidence for others. At the left-hand
end is a pair of massive base-crucks formerly supporting a half-hip (later
converted to a gable). Arch braced tie-beams were removed from a narrow
chimney bay and centrally over the hall in late C16/early C17 when the present
larger chimney was inserted with newel staircase. Good chamfered floor joists
over the hall; possibly also an alteration of c.1600.
