II

Former farmhouse. A very complex house, with work mainly of C14-C16, together
with later alterations. It comprises a long main range and, to the left, a
smaller rear wing set corner-to-corner to it and linked by a later rear
addition. Timber framed and plastered; the right gable end and left gable are
weatherboarded. Pantiled roof. 2 storeys with attic to main range. Windows
mainly small-paned 2-light casements of C19 date; one older mullioned window
to first floor. 2 plank doors. Above the left doorway at first floor level
is an oblong plaster panel bearing the date 1711 within a lunette with an
enriched border. Heavy internal stack to right, the lower portion of the
shaft original. In a corresponding position to the left is a C19 stack with
small square shaft. Rear wing is cement-rendered with a shallow-pitched roof;
standard casement windows and gable stack The C14 section comprises 2 bays
towards the left end of the main range, where there is a simple splayed scarf
joint in the wallplate. This section was raised over one metre in late
C16/early C17. The adjoining end bay is a C16 or early C17 addition. The
remainder of the range comprises hall and parlour cells. Most of the
structure in the hall cell is concealed; the hall bridging beam seems to be a
later insertion and may indicate that this part of the house also has a
medieval core. The hall has a fine C15-C16 plank and muntin cross partition.
Hall chimneybreast retains early spit rack. Hall chamber fireplace has late
C16 panelled plaster surround with raised borders. Beyond the stack is a late
C16 2-bay parlour addition. On the upper floor there is heavy studding, quite
widely-spaced, and reverse-curved braces. Evidence for 2 diamond-mullioned
side windows; a short distance below each of these is the lintol of a matching
window, set just above floor level, presumably an error of construction. The
parlour fireplace has remains of a Classical design painted on plaster and in
the chamber above is an arched brick fireplace. This chamber has an arch-
braced cambered tie beam carrying queen-posts; the original bracing to the
arcade plates has goner Remainder of roof of clasped-purlin form, a later
reconstruction using C16 rafters. Rear wing, perhaps of C15 date, has
widely-spaced studding with later studs between; stack inserted c1600 and
walls raised about one metre c1800; it was probably built as an attached kitchen or service wing.
"Doggetts" has been little altered since C17 and there are some C17
plank doors, old plaster and brick floors.
