STRADBROKE NEW STREET TM 27 SW

8/109 Timbers - -- II

Former farmhouse. In 2 main sections: a C15 range parallel with the road and to the right a late C16/early C17 2-cell cross-wing. A further small addition at the rear of the cross-wing. Timber framed, mainly cased in C19 red brick, colourwashed at the front; plastered to rear. Pantiled roofs. 2 storeys with attic to cross-wing. Windows mainly mid C20 casements with diamond-leaded glass. C20 door. Gable stack to older range, internal stack in cross-wing. The C15 range, now considerably altered, contained an open hall and a service cell. Moulded and embattled beams at each end of the hall, that to the lower end with evidence for the service doorways. Little of the C15 structure is visible and the open truss and original roof have been lost. C16 inserted floor: bridging beam with multiple mouldings and slightly chamfered heavy joists. Cross-wing substantially intact, with newel stairs and a first floor arched brick fireplace.
