Chestnut Tree Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Mid C16 with early C17 rear wing and early C19 alterations.
Timber framed, pebbledash render at front, plastered at rear. Front slope of
roof is slated, rear slope has glazed black pantiles. 2 storeys. 3-cell
form. 4 windows, irregularly-spaced sashes with glazing bars. C19 4-panel
door in 2 leaves, with glazed upper panels; pilasters and entablature. Mid
C20 glazed lean-to porch. Gable stack to left with white brick shaft. The
main stack between hall and parlour was removed in mid C20. Some exposed
framing, with evidence for diamond-mullioned windows at the service end (one
in situ). Part of one 4-centre arched cross-entry doorway. Cross partition
at service end removed. Plain crownpost roof: square crown posts braced to
the collar purlin; the crown post in the open truss over the hall chamber is
stop-chamfered. The C16 rafters were cut in early C19 when a shallower-pitch
roof was made. Small rear wing, probably a dairy, with intact first floor
framing and an altered queen-post roof.
