MENDHAM TM 28 SE 2/59 Walsham Hall - 29.7.55 -- II
Manor farmhouse. C16 or earlier core with C17 alterations and a later 2-span wing to rear. Timber framed with a red brick facade of c.1930; late C17 brick gable end to left. The remainder of the house is plastered. Roof of glazed black pantiles. 2 storeys and attic. 4 windows, C18 mullion and transom casements with large C20 panes. C19 4-panel door (the upper 2 panels glazed) and gabled timber trellis porch. 2 gabled dormers. Against each gable end an external stack, that to the right the heavier. A smaller external stack to the rear. One original mullioned window is visible in the rear wall. Good C17 dog-leg stair up to first floor with turned balusters and square newel posts with elaborate finials. At the right hand end a mid C20 ground floor fireplace incorporates 6 moulded bricks discovered in the house: 2 depict swans and 4 have geometric designs. Several original doors, and also one of c18 with raised and fielded panels. Roof has clasped and butt purlins with arched wind-bracing. In 1674 Walsham Hall had 16 hearths and the present house seems to be a consolidation of a larger dwelling.
