BATTISFORD MILL ROAD TM 05 SW
5/15 Mallard Cottage
II
House, early C17; extension to right of C18, and another to rear of mid C20. 2 storeys; 2-cell end-chimney plan with cross-passage entrance. Timber-framed and plastered. Thatched roof with external end chimney of red brick, mainly bitumin-coated; the chimney is possibly an C18 rebuilding. Mid C20 small-pane casements. Boarded C20 entrance door within gabled porch. A good and complete example of a 2-cell C17 house. Studwork has evidence for windows with sliding shutters; clamped 1st floor with substantial joists on edge and unchamfered. The 1st storey was originally undivided except by an arch-braced clasped-purlin roof. Open lintelled fireplace to the hall. A 1-storey C18 3- bay extension to right was possibly built for non-domestic use; it has primary-braced studding and reused main components.
