STERT MILL LANE SU 05 NW (south side) 9/202 Barn Cottage

GV II

Cottage. C17 and later. Timber framed with wattle and daub and brick infilling, extended to right as weatherboarded barn, all with thatched roof. Cottage single storey and attic, 2 bays. Left bay has gable to street framing 2 panels high on high brick plinth forming a single bay parlour cross wing, perhaps originally extended to south. Right bay has gable stack, remodelled in C18, set forward of left bay by 1 panel, having corner braces, some framing replaced in brick. Entrance in weatherboarded porch into projecting panel of right bay, and pent roof. Beyond stack, barn now converted to domestic use, the south wall and western bay rebuilt c1976. Interior: Chamfered and stopped spine beams to original cottage bays. Scratch date on fire lintel WN 1779 and oven front. Barn originally had through passage against dwelling. Elementary queen strut roof.
