Details
SHALBOURNE - SU 36 SW 6/156 Prosperous II House. Early and mid C19. Brick with tiled roof. Centre block 2- storey and attic, 3 bays, with gabled central porch and double glazed doors under round arch. Three-light sash and casement windows with gauged brick lintels. Centre bay raised as pediment, with large round-headed window. Dentilled eaves. Roof half-hipped and with 2 gabled dormers. Two-storey bay window added to right elevation and extensive later rear 2-storey wing. Parallel rear block of later C19 with shallow central gable of blue vitrified brick. Brick dentilled eaves. Roof hipped. Interior has some bolection moulded panelling, probably C19. The present building appears to replace a C17 brick structure on the same site, the bricks now reused as pavings. This earlier house was the house of Jethro Tull the agricultural improver, 1674 - 1740 and was called Mount Prosperous. Tull moved here c.1709 and wrote 'Horsehoing Husbandry' (1733) and other works.
