Details
SHANKLIN SZ5881 HIGH STREET 1352-0/8/200 81 Daish's Hotel II
Purpose built hotel. Earliest part built in 1833 by Jeremiah Rayner with mid C19 bar extension to north-west and later C19 extension to south-west. 1833 section is of stone rubble with slate roof. 2 storeys 4 windows. The second bay from left is recessed and the 4th bay has a larger projecting gable. All bays have gables with stone coping and kneelers. Triple casement windows. Right-hand bay has 4-light canted bay through both floors, crenellated above and with panels between floors. C19 door with Corinthian pilasters. Mid C19 bar extension is in Italianate style. Painted brick with stuccoed front and slate roof. 2 storeys 3 windows. Elaborate parapet with panels and scrolls. End pilasters. 3 sashes with vertical glazing bars, horns and eaved and fluted architraves. Ground floor has vermiculated pilasters and 4 round-headed arches to bar. To north-west is late C19 taller stone extension with brick dressings and slate roof. 3 storeys 4 gables. Sash windows, some in 2 storey canted bays and square belvedere. Interior of earliest portion has stick staircase with baluster-finial and scrolled tread ends. Curved internal bar front near Reception. The earliest surviving hotel in Shanklin, opened in the early C19.
