Manor house. C16. Small projecting wing on right of north front dated 1636; wing
behind it largely rebuilt early/mid C19. North front refaced and left range
added mid/late C19. Timber framed: C16 range has close studding and large
framing with plaster infill to garden. 1636 wing has small framing with braces,
and underbuilding and infill of whitewashed brick. Rebuilding and refacing of
brick. Old plain-tile roof; C19 brick ridge and internal stacks. U-plan extended
to complex F-plan, with wings to garden. 2 storeys; 6-window range. 1636 wing
has late C20 bow window. Moulded bressumer. First floor is largely underbuilt.
Old 3-light leaded wood mullioned and transomed window has some crown glass.
Gable bressumer has date. Left return side has exposed framing. Main range has
leaded 2-light casement in angle on first floor. Small amount of sandstone
ashlar to centre. Large central gable. C19 wood mullioned and transomed windows
and a first floor casement, mostly of 3 lights, have a glazing bar. Ground floor
has large 4-light window on left. Left return side has small porch with
chamfered Tudor arch and part-glazed door. Right return side has zig-zag
cornice. C19 and C20 casements. South front to garden has left wing of brick.
Gable with corbelling. Whitewashed right return side has late C20 three-light
casements. Centre and left return side of right wing have exposed studding.
Centre has late C20 glazed door and tall narrow C19 five-light window. C19
three-light casement above. Irregular gabled staircase projection, possibly C17,
on right is mostly of large framing. C20 window on right. First floor has C20
four-light casement. Gable has cambered bressumer. Right wing is rendered, over
timber framing and stone and brick plinth. C20 three-light casements. C19 stack
in angle between wing and right range has chamfered shafts. C19 right range has
large gable. Altered ground floor has C20 glazed door with overlight and large
conservatory window under single wood lintel. Two 3-light casements above. Host
windows throughout have glazing bars. Interior has exposed framing and heavy
ceiling beams. Room in right wing has open fireplace with chamfered bressumer
and bread oven. Dining room has open fireplace with chamfered bressumer and
cupboard with double-leaf moulded panelled doors. Broad-chamfered ceiling beam
has ogee stop. Window has C19 sliding shutter. Staircase hall has Tudor-arched
chamfered doorway with moulded beam above. Straight flight staircase with
winders has X-framed balustrade. Enclosed straight-flight staircase with
winders, possibly C17, has door with H-L hinges. First-floor room has massive
jowled posts and chamfered cambered tie beam. Moulded wood mullions of former
window. Several rooms have moulded plank doors, fielded 4-panelled doors or
2-panelled doors.
