Details

URCHFONT HIGH STREET SU 0457 (east side) 11/226 Friars Cottage GV II Cottage. Late C16 or early C17. Timber framed and brick on greensand high sills, thatched roof. Two storeys, basement and attics. Two bays set end on to street, with half bay at further end containing stack. Square framing, 2 panels high, to heavy bressumer, and upper panel of close studding with straight corner braces. Garage inserted into basement and stonework carried up to form stack gable. Six-panelled door against central wall of bay nearest road. Small canted bay window and three-light timber windows. Gable rebuilt C18 to incorporate a second gable stack and windows with segmental arched heads, the window frames replaced. Single recessed dormer on south side. Interior has date 1633 in plasterwork on upper floor.
