Details

WEST LAVINGTON HIGH STREET SU 0053 (west side) West Lavington 13/305 No 52 - - II

House and shop. C17 and mid C18. Colourwashed brick with tiled roof. Two storeys, 4 bays. Shops in left 2 bays, with C19 paned shop window and simple boarded door to left. Central 6 x fielded and panelled door to dwelling, with metal canopy on brackets. Moulded string course. Two 20-pane sashes to ground floor, recessed 2-light stone mullioned windows to upper floor with reserve chamfer mouldings. Sun fire mark. Nigel Balchin, novelist, lived here and attended Dauntsey's school from 1919 to 1927. Left gable rebuilt in blockwork forming buttress to front. Interior has deep chamfered spine beam, probably indicating an early-mid C17 house altered in C18.
