Details

TM 03 NW STRATFORD ST MARY HIGHAM ROAD (south side) 1/23 Lowe Hill House 22.2.55 - II* House. Probable early C15 range remodelled in early C17 by insertion of stack into cross passage, flooring over and raising of height of rear wall and recon- struction of roof. Mid C16 cross wing to right with attached rear range of probable early C16. Timber-framed with some painted brick casing. Plain tile roof and red brick stacks. L-plan. Originally open hall with 2-storey ends and rear range, now 2 storeys throughout. 2-bay hall with further bay at left representing former high end. 2-bay cross wing. 3-bay rear range. Former cross passage to right of hall retains original front entrance with 2-centred arch constructed from two pieces of timber. Entrance blocked on exterior but original door survives intact behind render. Close studding except where ground floor of left bay has been cased in brick. End of inserted bridging beam visible above middle rail of hall. Restored ovolo mullion windows throughout. Swept roof. Gabled dormer. Corniced saw-tooth stack to right. Cross wing close-studded with down braces. Jettied 1st floor. Restored ovolo mullion and transom windows, that to 1st floor with mullioned side windows. 2-light window to gable with barge- boards, swept roof. Rear: door resited to right of original position, studded moulded plank door with shaped head under renewed Tudor arch. Two levels of wall plates indicate raising of 1st floor. Close studding. Restored ovolo mullion windows. Rear range: studding replaced in part, brick casing to end bay. Restored ovolo mullion windows. Two saw tooth-stacks. Protruding brick bread oven with tiled roof to gable end. Interior: hall range, original front door survives in later cupboard to front of inserted stack, studded plank door with batons. Chamfered bridging beam with curved stop. Moulded plank door to cross wing with Tudor-arched head. Cross wing replaced original service range. Chamfered beam with run-out stop and exposed joists. Central post to return wall has initials RB carved in relief (rather remodelled) and mutilated shield above. Orange brick fireplace with chamfered steeply-cambered arch. Section of strapwork wall painting to right in red, white and black. Rear range 1st room has complete C17 panelling with fine hand-painted decoration to each panel, cornice and panelled door with cocks head hinges incorporating two linenfold panels. Centre room has studded moulded plank door with shaped head and 2 large chamfered posts, that to left with jewel stops, with arch braces to massive stop chamfered beam above fireplace. Chamfered longitudinal beam and exposed joists to centre and end rooms. Varying floor and ceiling levels indicate more than one build. First floor: cross wing has chamfered cambered orange brick fireplace. Rear range centre room posts and arch braces to tie beam (supports crown post above). Roof: rear range not fully inspected but front 2 bays retain crown post roof. Plain square post adjacent to stack, down brace to tie beam and arch brace to purlin. Collars. No blackening. Cross wing: clasped purlin roof with wind braces, some blackened rafters imply reuse. Hall range, smoke-blackened rafters of C15 front roof pitch survive beneath later roof.
