MILDENHALL
MILL STREET
Number 9
II
House, early C16 with alterations of late C16 and C19. 2 storeys. 3-cell
lobby entrance plan. Timber-framed and rough-cast rendered in panels. The
upper floor is jettied along the street frontage. Concrete plaintiled roof
with axial chimney of gault brick. C19 small-pane sash windows at 1st floor. 2
C19 splayed bay windows at ground floor, that to right is a shop window
cantilevered on brackets. 4-panelled C19 entrance door. A carriage entrance
to right has a pair of large C19 boarded doors; this was probably formed by
raising the upper floor of the original service end of the house. Good rib-
moulded main beams and joists exposed in hall and parlour. The axial chimney
was rebuilt later C16, incorporating limestone blocks, some moulded, from a
medieval building. The hall fireplace has an ogee-moulded bressumer and the
chamber above has an arched opening with moulded plasterwork. Exposed in 2 1st
floor rooms are original windows with moulded mullions. A late C16 kitchen
wing has an external chimney with large fireplace; clasped purlin roof. The
main roof was rebuilt C19.
