TL 77 SW TUDDENHAM THE GREEN

4/52 Nether Hall - (formerly listed as Netherhall 7/5/54 Farmhouse) - II

House. Formerly famhouse. C16 with alterations of C17; restored c,1980. A 2-cell hall range with later cross-wing to left. 2 storeys and attics. Timber-framed and plastered. The cross-wing has close-studded framing exposed. Plaintiled side-purlin roofs with central C17 chimneys of red brick to both hall range and cross-wing; saw-tooth pattern flues on a rectangular base. Mainly 3-light casements of c.1980, with leaded lights, and boarded and battened entrance door. The walls of the hall range were raised in C17 or C18, to give 2 full storeys. A 1st floor fireplace in the cross-wing has part of a C17 wall painting of intricate but faded multicoloured designs; possibly an achievement. Another chamber fireplace of c.1600 has moulded plasterwork to the head and jambs. A staircase of c.1600 has pierced splat balusters, moulded handrails and heavily carved newel posts. Very close studding and heavy 1st floor members to the hall range of mid C16.
