BIDDULPH C.P. BIDDULPH GRANGE SJ 85 NE SJ 8932 5915 7/7 Egyptian portal and - two pairs of sphinxes 20.3.74 GV II*
Ornamental garden building Egyptian portal and 2 pairs of sphinxes. Circa 1856, by John Bateman. Stone. Two pairs of Egyptian sphinxes of reduced scale, set apart by approximately 3m, mark short entrance axis to Egyptian-style portal with coved lintol carved with pseudo-Pharaonic device. Clipped yew hedges form the bulk and the artfulness of the composition, both flanking in tiered columns and massed up behind the portal in a solid wall. Certainly the collaborative work of Bateman and his friend, the painter E.W. Cooke. (Diaries of E.W. Cooke [unpublished]).
