History

North Walsham is a medieval market town that grew wealthy from the trade of wool and cloth. The town was largely rebuilt following a fire in 1600 but remained a significant market centre into the Industrial Revolution.

Numbers 8 – 10 Market Place are located along one of the earliest streets to be developed within the settlement of North Walsham. Although the existing building dates to the early C19 century, it is likely that the plot was developed before. The building is first shown on the Tithe Map of 1842. It is likely to always have had a ground floor commercial function in each unit of the group. The shop fronts have been altered, reflecting a variety of changing uses including, amongst others, a building society, green grocers, and shoe shop
