History
North Walsham is a medieval market town that grew wealthy from the trade of wool and cloth. The town was largely rebuilt following a fire in 1600 but remained a significant market centre into the Industrial Revolution.
The building at Number 11 Market Place stands on one of the earliest roads developed in North Walsham. Following the fire in 1600 the town layout was amended in places during rebuilding, including the addition of parallel ‘Lokes’ south of the Market Place. One such Loke is incorporated within the carriage arch at Number 11 Market Place. The house and shop at Number 11 was constructed in the early C19. It is depicted on the Tithe Map of 1842 and recorded as being a house at that time. The ground floor commercial premises are likely to be historic. The current shop front dates to the late C20, with alterations made in the 1990s.
