Nos.16, 17 (Middle Cottage) and 18
II
2 houses, now 3 dwellings. Late C17, C18 and C19. Regular coursed and squared
coursed limestone with thatch, Collyweston slate and concrete tile roof.
Originally probably one-unit and 3-unit lobby-entry plans. Single storey with
attic, part is 2-storey. Together comprising an irregular 7-window range of C19
and C20 casements, some with glazing bars, under original wood and C20 concrete
lintels. C20 door to far right and 2 C20 doors to left. Left hand corner of
No.17 (Middle Cottage) breaks forward, also right hand corner of No.18, probably
indicating the extent of the original 3-unit house. Lean-to extension, with C20
pantile roof, to right of centre. Right gable of No.18 has a half hipped roof.
Brick and stone stacks at ridge and end. Rear elevation of main range has C19
and C20 casements under wood lintels and eyebrow dormers. Semi-circular bread
oven projection to right of No.17 (Middle Cottage). C19 one window range
attached to rear of No.16, and abutting the road, has C20 concrete roof.
Single-storey range, attached, now forms part of house, with garage, and has a
Collyweston slate roof. Interior; No.17 (Middle Cottage) has 2 open fireplaces
with bressumers and stop-chamfered spine beams. Interiors of Nos.16 and 18 not
inspected. Single-storey range abutting road said to have been the forge.
Probably converted to several farm workers dwellings during C19. Included for
group value.
