Great Addington Manor House

Manor house. Partially legible early C17 datestone, C18, and enlarged mid/late
C19 for Lane family. Squared coursed limestone with Collyweston slate roof.
Originally E-shape plan, now complex. 2 storeys with attic. Main front of
7-window range. Central 3-storey gabled porch has 4-centred arched doorway with
datestone, 1615, above. C17 three-light stone mullion window to first floor and
attic above. 2-light stone mullion windows flanking porch and C17 gabled wings
breaking forward to left and right. C19 three-light stone mullion windows to
ground and first floors, those to ground floor have transoms. C17 similar
3-light attic windows to apex of gables. C19 outer gables break forward to far
left and right and have 6-light stone mullion windows; those at ground floor
have transoms. Continuous hood mould to ground and first floor windows. Ashlar
gable parapets and kneelers and ashlar stacks at ridge and eaves. Elevation to
left of main front is a 4-window range of C19 stone mullion windows; large
canted stone bay with panelled frieze to right and moulded stone door surround
to left. 4-window range attached at right angles to this elevation is probably
C18. Centre 2 bays break forward slightly. C19 2-light stone mullion windows,
raised string course between floors and ashlar parapet with moulded cornice. C19
billiard room breaks forward to rear right of main front. Gable has inscribed
tablet of Viscountess Downe, wife of Squire Lane. Rear elevation has 3 C17
gables, some with stone mullion windows. C19 extension to rear in similar style
is domestic offices. Interior: entrance hall has C17 panelling, some reset, and
fireplace with moulded stone surround and 4-centre head. Staircase with half
landing has moulded splat balusters, some are C17 others are C19 copies. Rear
hall and reception rooms to left and right of entrance hall have some C19
panelling, and moulded stone fireplace surrounds. Some of these have Delft tiles
and carved overmantles fprmed from reset C17 panels. First floor bathroom to
right of landing has C17 fireplace with moulded stone surround. Some first floor
fireplaces have overmantles formed from reset C17 panelling. Ceilings of first
floor rooms have C19 coving taken into attic level. Winder stair to attic is
over porch and has C17 turned handrail. Former kitchen in C19 domestic offices
at rear retains original range. First floor room to rear is coal store used for
servicing the bedrooms. Some original roof structure remains.
