FELTON ACTON NU 10 SE 6/93 Acton Hall 31/12/69 GV II

House. Main block c.1730 incorporating C17 or earlier fabric; extended to east in early C19. Squared stone except for earlier rubble fabric in west wall; cut dressings; Welsh slate roof. Double-span main block with extension to east of front part.

South elevation in two sections. Left part 2 storeys + attics, 2 + 1 + 2 bays. Four steps, flanked by low walls carrying terracotta urns, up to central C19 half-glazed door, with patterned glass, in bolection-moulded surround, the moulding arched over a lintel panel with coat of arms; flanking moulded brackets but no cornice. Sash windows in moulded surrounds. Ground- floor openings have segmental floating pediments above. Coped gables on moulded kneelers. Two flat-topped roof dormers with paired 8-pane casements. Stepped-and-corniced end stacks, that to left rendered. 3-bay right part shows sashes, coped gable on moulded kneelers and stepped-and-corniced right end stack. Twin-gabled left return shows masonry of several different periods: right projecting stepped chimney breast and outline of gable end of earlier house; left 2 small chamfered windows and one with timber lintel. Rear elevation shows several windows, with C19 fancy leaded glazing, and 2 round-arched stair windows.

Interior: Dining Room and Morning Room have enriched cornices; rear passage has 2 panelled archways with imposts and keyblocks. Dog-leg open-string stair with turned vase-on-urn balusters, similar newels, ramped and moulded grip handrail and curtail step. Front block has 2-panel bedroom doors in corniced surrounds, and 7-bay roof with pegged collar-beam trusses showing carpenters numbers I, II, (III), 4, V and VI.

Note: the front elevation of the main block is almost identical to that of Elyhaugh (q,v.), also in Felton parish, which is dated 1732.
