BRINKBURN BRINKBURN PRIORY NZ 19 NW 10/73 Riverside wall north of Manor House, with attached gatepiers GV II

Riverside wall and gatepiers. Medieval, remodelled and partly rebuilt in early C19. Squared stone with cut dressings. Wall c.150 metres long, 5 metres high to river but only 1 metre internally. Gabled C19 coping with occasional crenellations. Seen from across the river, a long stretch of wall to the left has medieval masonry, including a corbelled-out projection close to the attached gateway, extending to a little below the coping. Central part, with steps down to water, entirely rebuilt. Right end part with chamfered set-back at mid-height is probably medieval, and joins north- west corner of walled yard of Manor House (q.v.). Internal face shows attached gateway towards north end; the gatepiers have C15 or early C16 mouldings and later swept dips (ball finials missing) and may be an in-situ remnant of a priory gatehouse.

Later attached wall to east of gatepiers is not of special interest.
