HEDGELEY A 697 NU 01 NE (West side) 4/216 Hedgeley West Cottages (Nos 5-10 consecutive) and linking walls GV II

Three pairs of cottages. Late C18 or early C19, remodelled in later C19 with addition of bay windows and rear wings. Squared stone with tooled-and-margined dressings; returns and rear wings squared rubble; purple Scottish slate roofs, except for Welsh slates on rear wings. Each cottage 1 storey, 2 bays: central doorways, those to Nos. 5 and 6 in chamfered surrounds; vertical-panelled doors except for 4-panel door to No. 9 and flush-panelled door to No. 10. Canted bay windows with chamfered plinths,except for Nos. 9 and 10 which have rendered bases; 4-pane casement windows. Projecting gables with patterned and pierced bargeboards. Each pair of cottages has a central ridge stack with chamfered cap, also lateral stacks on side walls of rear wings. Nos. 5 and 6 have coped end gables on moulded kneelers. The pairs of cottages are linked by short lengths of wall, each flat-coped and holding 2 boarded doors.
