FELLSIDE
Duke's House,
including wall of
terrace to south

1873. Built for a Darlington Banker and extended in sympathetic style early
in C20.
Large baronial building with Gothic ornament on a basically classical arrangement,
symmetrical to south, very unsymmetrical to west (entrance front) 2 storeys,
attic and basement. 6 bays to south, 4 to west. Snecked smooth rubble with
ashlar dressings. Plate glass sash windows. Many gables, some crow-stepped,
2 turrets with conical roofs and one, a dormer on south front, with pyramidal
roof. The skyline is enlivened by several tall chimney stacks with conjoined
circular shafts having roll moulded cornices and fillets. South front has
a rythm of canted bays alternating with flat bays, and tall gabled dormers.
Entrance front has variety of projections, bays and turrets including large
crenellated porch with gabled panel over ogival doorway. The south front
parapet extends over a 2 storey bay to right of west front. Quasi-machicolation
in 2nd bay from left to south, above 3 pointed cusp sash windows, and in 3
light oriel to west. Terrace to south with buttressed ramparts to east and
west, wide central steps to lower terrace with ha-ha. Interior: Gothic cornices
and applied shafts to doorcases in hall which also has large crenellated fireplace.
Carved corbels to beam over staircase, newel carved with stiff leaf ornament.
Parlour contains wooden Italian fireplace with carved scenes (eg Birth of
Venus). Pointed arch at head of staircase. Library, in early C20 addition,
panelled with 4 centred arch headed fireplace.
