TQ 4110 SW LEWES CASTLE GATE

(west side) 9/25 Castle Lodge and stable wing (formerly listed as Stables of Castle GV Lodge) II House. C18 including part of the curtain wall of the Bailey, em- battled in the early C19. Flint with rendered band below embattled parapet. Plain tiled roofs with various irregular stacks. U- plan. South front: the cross-stroke of the U. Embattled parapets to right and in centre, the righthand part projecting slightly with rather higher parapet. Wall breaks and turns forward about two yards left of centre then completely stops; to the left the house continues with flint walls and no parapet to tiled roofs. Low single-storey recessed wing of 1 bay to right. Irregular fenestration of 2 windows on both floors with double glazed doors to left with transom-light over. East front: 2 storeys; 3 window frist floor, with wide window on ground floor to right and similar window to left in projecting single- storey block. Round-arched doorway in centre with half-glazed door. in shallow projecting porch. 2-storey flint and brick stable wing projecting to north with carved stone crest facing east, possibly of French origin. Interior: Neo-Jacobean staircase of circa 1850. Surgery waiting-room has a Neo-Jacobean fire-surround of wood with floriate carving. Castle Lodge was the home during the early part of the C20 of Charles Dawson, the discoverer of 'Piltdown Man'.
