5/3 Elstead Bridge 9/3/60 I

Bridge. C13, possibly by the Monks of Waverley Abbey. Sandstone rubble slabs with blocks of darker ironstone, wooden, C20 parapet railings. Originally 7 arches, now five with "Keeled", i.e. pointed, cutwaters upstream and rounded cutwaters over "keeled" plinths downstream. One of an early series of bridges over the River Wey between Farnham and Guildford and of great historical importance. The bridge is a scheduled Ancient Monument. Surrey Antiquity No. 149.
