GODALMING BRIGHTON ROAD SU 94 SE and SU 9742 (north east side), Busbridge 2/43 and 16/43 Garden Wall to front of Munstead Orchard and to 11.9.87 Heath Lane House and Quadrangle GV II

Garden walls to Munstead Orchard (q.v) and formerly to Munstead Woodd (q.v. bushbridge C.P). Late Cl9, for Gertrude Jekyll. Bargate rubblestone, part with tile coping. In front of Munstead Orchard the wall is low with domed, oversailing, coping broken by gateway with wooden gate; it steps up at left end to approx 2 metres in height before returning to house. To south-east, wall is taller, approx 2 metres high, having ridged tile coping and raking buttresses; on the garden side the base of the wall is battered; the Heath Lane House section was densely over- grown at time of inspection and partially collapsed in one place. The taller roadside walling originally formed part of Gertrude Jekyllis garden at Munstead Wood which is listed Grade I in the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest (Part 40, Surrey). J Brown, Gardens of a Golden Afternoon (1982), pp 35-41.
