Country house. c.1590, probably by Robert Smythson for the Earl
of Shrewsbury. Altered C18 and later. Coursed squared rubble
with ashlar dressings and graduated stone slate roof. Chamfered
plinth, quoins, moulded first and third floor bands, deep moulded
eaves, plain parapet; 5 ridge and 3 rear wall stacks, coped
gables, with kneelers. 5 storeys plus garrets, cross plan. Most
windows are leaded casements. Main south facade has projecting
central bay with single storey C19 square bay window with coped
parapet and 4 plain sashes flanked by single blocked openings.
Above, single large round headed C18 glazing bar sash with
engaged shafts and moulded square headed reveal with blank
shields in spandrels. Above again, C16 18-light mullioned and
transomed window with the top and outer rows of lights blocked.
Above again, single mullioned casement. Wing to left has in
return angle single storey C19 porch with four centred arched
door; to left, C19 3 light mullioned window. Above, 2 three
light C16 mullioned windows on all 4 upper floors. Wing to right
has 2 three light C16 mullioned windows, that to right blocked,
and above, 2 similar windows on each floor. West gable end has
central projecting bay, with, to left, blocked chamfered doorway
and to right, C19 3 light mullioned window. Above single 4 light
mullioned window on each floor and above again, similar 21ight
window. Flanking bay to left has C19 2 light mullioned window,
and above, 2 superimposed tall 6 light mullioned and transomed
windows, all lights but one blocked. Flanking bay to right has
blocked C19 2 light mullioned window in porch, and above, single
blocked window. Rear elevation has central projecting bay with
flanking wings, each with a central corbelled projecting shaft
with 3 blocked windows, uniting with a chimney stack at eaves
level. To left, C20 single storey flat-roofed addition with
central doorway and 3 casements. Central bay has 6 light
mullioned window with one blocked light; above, 18 light
mullioned and transomed window with 10 blocked lights; above
again, a similar window with all lights blocked, and above again,
unglazed 2 light mullioned window. Wing to left has, to right,
above, a single 3 light mullioned window on each floor, with all
lights but 2 blocked. Wing to right has 3 light mullioned window
with one blocked light, and to right, C19 close boarded door in
chamfered reveal. Above, similar window and to its right
blocked doorway with chamfered reveal. Above, to left, a single
3 light mullioned window on each floor, the upper 2 with 2
blocked lights. East gable end has central projecting bay with
C20 single storey lean-to, brick with asbestos cement roof,
blocking 3 lights of original 4 light mullioned window. Above,
single 4 light mullioned window on first and second floors;
above again, similar blocked windows on third and fourth floors.
Above again, blocked 2 light mullioned window. Bay to left has 2
light mullioned window, and above, single blocked opening. Bay
to right has, above, 2 superimposed 6 light blocked mullioned and
transomed windows.
House interior is greatly altered. West wing
has original spiral stair with square ashlar newel and treads
mostly of oak slabs. Third floor Great Chamber has large moulded
ashlar doorcase and moulded ashlar side wall fireplace with ears
and shoulders, flanked to left by chamfered blocked opening with
broach stops. Other rooms have 5 chamfered doorways and 5
smaller fireplaces with chamfered reveals. 3 early C19
fireplaces and grates; 10 fielded panel C18 doors. Softwood
queen-post roof, late C18.
