NZ 06 SE BROOMLEY AND STOCKSFIELD MERRY SHIELD
5/102 Merry Shield Farmhouse, attached cottage, farmbuilding, house occupied by Mr & Mrs Beattie and garden wall.
II
Farmhouse with attached cottage to north and farmbuilding range to east, linking it with eastern house; garden wall attached to east of eastern house. Late C18 except for cottage extension mid C19. Rubble, with cut quoins and dressings; part rendered; farmbuilding brick-lined; wall brick with stone plinth and coping. Purple slate roof with stone copings and brick stacks.
Plan: originally a single near-symmetrical composition, but farmhouse extended to north and cottage added to form L-shape. Long south front has 3-storey 1-bay ends and 2-storey centre, blank except for door in modern glazed porch to eastern house; and boarded central door in narrow-chamfered opening, with pitching door to right and small window to left, where the farmhouse extends into the first bay of the farmbuilding.
Left return shows main front of farmhouse, which incorporates 1-bay of the 2- storey extension: 2 wide irregular bays with boarded door to cottage at left and 4-panel door to farmhouse at right, both under overlights; scattered 4-pane sashes in this part. Original 3-storey farmhouse, 1 wide bay: tripartite sashes with glazing bars on ground and first floors, keyed bunette above. Stone gable copings on curved kneelers; stacks at right end and on ridge and left end of extension.
Right return shows eastern house similar to farmhouse, except that east wall is rendered and first-floor window replaced, in its tripartite form, with casements.
Rear elevation shows pebbledash on cottage. Outbuilding 6 bays with angled stone stair to loft door at left: 3 boarded doors and part-slatted openings.
Wall (the remnant of a large walled garden) runs north from north-east corner of eastern house for about 30 metres and returns east for 2 metres at north end. Flat slab coping.
Small brick and breeze-block extensions to rear of eastern house are not of interest.
