Details
SP43SE DEDDINGTON B4031 (North side) Clifton 3/133 Duke of Cumberland's Head Public House
GV II Public house. Probbly Cl7, re-modelled and/or enlarged early C18. Coursed squared marlstone with wooden lintels; thatch and Welsh-slate roofs with brick ridge stacks. 3-unit outshut plan, probably with cross passage, and with added rear wing. 2 storeys. 4-window front, in 2 or 3 builds, has wide windows in bays one and 2, one of which retains a 3-light C19 casement; bays 3 and 4 have smaller renewed casements at first floor plus a C19/C20 canted bay window to right. Entrance in bay 3 is concealed by a C20 wooden porch; secondary entrance with plank door to right of bay 4. Stacks flank bay 2. Lower slated outbuilding range to left is now part of the accommodation and includes a vehicular entry to extreme left. Rear wing, returning from right of main range is probably mostly C20 but incorporates an earlier range. Interior: large inglenook fireplace with chamfered bressumer; stop-chamfered spine beam. Recorded as a public house since 1774. Included for group value. (VCH: Oxfordshire: Vol XI, p88)
