BANBURY SOUTH BAR STREET SP4540SW (West side) 9/195 No.40 (Oxfordshire County 09/04/52 Council Social Services) (Formerly listed as No.40) GV II*
House, now offices. Early C18, remodelled 1784. Ironstone ashlar. Steeply pitched stone slate roof. Brick end and ridge stacks. 2 storeys plus attic; 8-window range. Ground floor has off-centre entrance to left with vermiculated, rusticated surround and head keystone. 6-panelled door with fanlight. 3 sashes to left and 3 sashes to right have glazing bars (3-pane width). Tripartite sash window to far right has arched head and is in position of former carriageway entrance. 8 sashes to first floor include sash with shouldered stone architrave and cornice (all 3-pane width). To far right a Venetian window with intersecting glazing bars. Moulded and chamfered eaves cornice below rendered parapet. 4 gabled roof dormers. Rainwater head dated 1784. Interior: C18/C19 open well staircase; carved wood Adam style fireplaces, one with overmantle; plaster ceilings in ground floor and first floor room. Panelled doors, dados, cornices, window shutters.
