HOLTON SP60NW 6/116 Holton place, Holton Place 23/04/85 House and Old Place - II

Substantial house now 3 dwellings. Early/mid C18, late C18 and mid C19. Limestone rubble and ashlar; plain-tile and Welsh-slate roofs. Long irregular plan. One storey plus attics and 2 storeys. Front has, to right, a 4-window C18 range with small-pane and leaded 3-light casements and dormers, the 2 bays to the left having brick quoins and flat arches. The central 2 bays of the front project considerably with a steep-pitched gable and a shallow hipped gable. Both bays have Gothick windows with triple-arched stone heads. Doorway, in brick extension on the right, has similar head. Remainder of front, to left, has a mid C19 ashlar 2-storey range with 2 small gables over arched first-floor windows with honeycomb glazing bars. At ground floor is a large canted bay window, with triple-arched heads, clustered-shaft mullions and a pendant cornice, beside a porch with 4-centre arched doorway. To extreme left is a slightly later single-storey ashlar addition with clasping pilasters. Its end wall has 3 Gothick arched windows and a central gable with pierced serpentine bargeboard and elaborate pendants. Interior: Holton Place House has an inserted late C17 stair with widely-spaced heavy turned balusters. Interiors of Holton Place and Old Place not inspected. Formerly a single dwelling known as Holton Place and forming part of the Holton Park estate.
