7/197 Ardington Mill and 8-10-87 attached Pottery

GV II

Water Mill. Later C19 with early C19 origins. Red brick with flared headers in Flemish bond; old plain-tile roof. 2-storey, 3-bay range. C20 part-glazed door to right of centre. 2-light segmental-headed wood casement with segmental brick head to left. Single-light wood casement with segmental brick head to centre. Hoist doorway to first floor centre, with C20 door. Platform on shaped brackets, and gabled hood on shaped brackets. Interior not inspected but noted as having overshot iron wheel of early C19 with wood blades or scoops. Rest of machinery removed for restoration at time of survey. Attached dairy, now pottery, to left. Circa 1880. Coursed stone rubble plinth; red brick to right; close-studded timber-framing with rendered infill to left; old plain- tile roof; brick end stack to right at junction with mill. Olde Englishe Style. Single-storey, single-bay range to right, single storey and attic; 2-bay cross-wing to left. Lean-to porch to right with open wood baluster screen. C20 part-glazed door to right return of cross-wing to left. Double- leaf doors to right. Leaded lights to some upper panels of timber-framing to left. Interior: ground floor room to left has slate shelves and decorative tiling. History: the mill was probably rebuilt and dairy probably built as part of the progressive policy of the Lockinge Estate and supplied the Ardington bakery and shop (qv. Ardington Post Office and attached house).
