GV II*

Gazebo. Early C18. Red brick front of header bond, and Flemish bond centre; sides and rear of chequer brick. Felt flat roof. Gazebo above cockpit. One-storey, 2-window range front. Entry to gazebo from terrace flanked by halved apses with entry to closet on right and stairs on left: gauged brick flat arches over central 8-panelled door and late C19 single-light casements in outer bays: flat brick arches-over late C19 panelled doors to sides. 2-storey side walls have keyed round-arched doorways to cockpit, gauged brick-flat arches over 9-pane sashes and blind window to right: splayed stone stair-light to left. Carved cornice. Interior: cockpit has quarry tile floor and domed brick ceiling; stone winder stairs. Panelled gazebo with pilasters flanking windows. Raised terrace has stone-coped walls of random bond brick, and stone rubble finished in brick: wall bulges out at intervals to accommodate a group of ancient yew trees. Stone steps with stone coped ramp and pier descends to fine wrought-iron gates with crested overthrow arch: L-shaped wall of chequer brick, returned to house (q.v.), has a brick gatepier with stone pineapple finial at corner. It is likely that the terrace originally overlooked a formal garden, probably a parterre, to the west. (Buildings of England: Berkshire, pp.160-161).
